For us, stock picking is in large part the hunt for the truly magnificent stocks. But when you hold the right stock for the right time period, the rewards can be truly huge. One bright shining star stock has been HL Global Enterprises Limited (SGX:AVX), which is 468% higher than three years ago.

We don't think that HL Global Enterprises's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

In the last 3 years HL Global Enterprises saw its revenue shrink by 14% per year. So it's pretty amazing to see the stock price has zoomed up 78% per year in that time. This clear lack of correlation between revenue and share price is surprising to see in a money losing company. At the risk of upsetting holders, this does suggest that hope for a better future is playing a significant role in the share price action.

A Dividend Lost

The value of past dividends are accounted for in the total shareholder return (TSR), but not in the share price return mentioned above. By accounting for the value of dividends paid, the TSR can be seen as a more complete measure of the value a company brings to its shareholders. HL Global Enterprises's TSR over the last 3 years is 504%; better than its share price return. Even though the company isn't paying dividends at the moment, it has done in the past.

A Different Perspective

HL Global Enterprises shareholders are down 9.6% for the year, but the market itself is up 4.3%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2.6% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Shareholders might want to examine this detailed historical graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.
