Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Parksville's Community Infrastructure

PARKSVILLE, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Mar 11, 2013) - Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Parksville Community Park under the Harper Government''s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Parksville Community Park is a focal point for tourists accessing our renowned warm water beaches. I am pleased that our Government investing in the expansion of recreational exercise opportunities for adults in partnership with Parksville Lions Club and complementing the Lions'' Venture Land playground for children. Our investment will improve accessibility and contribute to enhanced quality of life for tourists and visitors alike, while creating expanded economic opportunity for years to come," said Dr. Lunney.

The Harper Government''s investment of $65,597 will be used to install an outdoor fitness centre at Parksville Community Park. The Club has designed the centre with rubber surfaced sidewalks to make the facility fully accessible.

"The Parksville Lions Club is truly appreciative of the financial support received from the Government of Canada to install an outdoor gym at our community park," said Lion Secretary Duane Round. "This will provide access to the benefits of outdoor exercise for all Oceanside area residents and especially those with mobility challenges."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
