Hedge funds and other investment firms run by legendary investors like Israel Englander and Ray Dalio are entrusted to manage billions of dollars of accredited investors' money because they are without peer in the resources they use to identify the best investments for their chosen investment horizon. Moreover, they are more willing to invest a greater amount of their resources in small-cap stocks than big brokerage houses, and this is often where they generate their outperformance, which is why we pay particular attention to their best ideas in this space.

Companhia Energetica Minas Gerais (NYSE:CIG) shareholders have witnessed a decrease in support from the world's most elite money managers of late. CIG was in 6 hedge funds' portfolios at the end of September. There were 7 hedge funds in our database with CIG positions at the end of the previous quarter. Our calculations also showed that CIG isn't among the 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds.

According to most shareholders, hedge funds are perceived as underperforming, outdated financial vehicles of yesteryear. While there are greater than 8,000 funds in operation at the moment, We choose to focus on the bigwigs of this group, approximately 700 funds. We view hedge fund activity in the stock unfavorable, but in this case there was only a single hedge fund selling its entire position: King Street Capital. One hedge fund selling its entire position doesn't always imply a bearish intent. Theoretically a hedge fund may decide to sell a promising position in order to invest the proceeds in a more promising idea. However, we don't think this is the case in this case because none of the 700+ hedge funds tracked by Insider Monkey identified CIG as a viable investment and initiated a position in the stock.
