Helios Technologies (NASDAQ:HLIO) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 119% Share Price Gain

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Helios Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIO) share price has soared 119% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 40% in about a quarter. This could be related to the recent financial results, released recently - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Helios Technologies' earnings per share are down 19% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

We doubt the modest 0.5% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 23% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Helios Technologies is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Helios Technologies' TSR for the last 5 years was 129%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Helios Technologies has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 96% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 18% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
