Here's everything we know so far about 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'
The current Marvel Cinematic Universe of Spider-Man does whatever a teen superhero can: buddy up with New York’s shiniest Avenger, save his classmates during a trip to the Washington Monument and fight his would-be girlfriend’s criminal mastermind dad. Now, in his second solo outing, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is taking part in another time-honored high-school tradition: studying abroad. The just-released trailer for Far From Home provides a taste of what’s in store for Spidey when he journeys across the pond for an action-packed tour of the continent. Based on the teaser and behind-the-scenes reports, here’s everything we know about the wall-crawler’s latest adventure so far.
Proof of life
“But how can Spider-Man still be alive?” we hear you ask. “He turned to dust in Tony Stark’s arms!” True … but a permanent death was never Marvel’s endgame. Far From Home is hitting theaters on July 5, three months after Avengers: Endgame is set to heal some — though perhaps not all — of the casualties Thanos racked up during Infinity War. Considering his close relationship to Tony, not to mention the fact that Sony Pictures has an entire Spider-Verse to maintain, it’s no shock that Peter would be at the very top of the resurrection list.
The circumstances of his return will be explained come April 26, when Avengers: Endgame premieres, but for now just rejoice that he’s alive. For that matter, so are Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) — whose post-Infinity War status was previously unclear — as well as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who phoned a powerful friend moments before vanishing.
A Stark reminder
Since Spidey first joined the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, he’s never been far from his iron-clad mentor. But that could change with Far From Home, as the trailer studiously avoids mentioning whether Tony is part of the post-Endgame world order. The fact that Peter declines to take his Spidey suit with him to Europe suggests that this trip may be designed, in part, to put any tragic wartime memories behind him. On the other hand, Happy seems remarkably upbeat for a guy who may have just lost his close pal. But then, you know what they say about love healing all wounds…
Love, European-style
Going by Twitter reactions, pretty much everyone is in love with Tomei’s May Parker. So it’s no surprise that Happy is also smitten with Peter’s aunt, much to the teenager’s abject embarrassment. But love is also in the air for Peter; while his once-burgeoning relationship with Liz (Laura Harrier) is kaput, the romantic European atmosphere leads him and MJ (Zendaya) to finally notice each other’s prettiness — something that’s been obvious to moviegoers for a while now.
Enter Mysterio
Once upon a time, Jake Gyllenhaal came thisclose to playing Spider-Man when Tobey Maguire and Sony Pictures had a temporary falling-out before production started on Spider-Man 2. Now he’s finally getting his chance to play a (super) hero as Quentin Beck, better known as the Master of Illusion, Mysterio. But wait! Isn’t Mysterio a bad guy? In the comic books, yes — and we know that Gyllenhaal is an expert on the Spidey comics.
But the Far From Home trailer suggests that Quentin is introducing himself to the world as the next great Avenger — one capable of defeating a trio of marauding elemental villains. (More on them in a minute.) We’re presuming that’s where the “Master of Illusion” part comes in; our working theory is that Quentin is manufacturing these threats in order to mask a more sinister agenda. Say it ain’t so, Jake!
Master(s) of the elements
Spider-Man: Homecoming took a street-level approach to superhero crimefighting, as Spidey tangled with such self-made villains as Michael Keaton’s tech-savvy Vulture instead of out-of-this-world bad guys like Thanos. That changes in Far From Home, where the threats are bigger in nature … emphasis on the word “nature.”
As eagle-eyed fans have noted, the trailer sneaks in numerous numerical references revealing exactly which elemental enemies the wall-crawler is dealing with: Molten Man, Hydro-Man and Sandman — one of the many (if you ask us, too many) villains that Maguire’s Spidey faced in the overstuffed Spider-Man 3. (The fact that a previous version of the Sandman exists have led some to suggest that this version is the lesser-known villain Magnum.) And remember … these jokers may just be smoke and mirrors for the real threat: Mysterio.
The suit makes the Spider
Spider-Man’s duds have gone through multiple upgrades from the DIY version that Tony Stark saw in Civil War. Homecoming gifted him with an AI-enhanced outfit; Infinity War turned him into the Iron Spider; and Far From Home puts him inside a shadowy stealth suit for maximum sneakiness.
Uncle Ben is still dead
With great power comes great … luggage? We have yet to learn the exact circumstances of how this version of Ben Parker shuffles off this mortal coil (or passes along his iconic advice about power and responsibility to his young nephew), but he’s still very much a presence in Peter’s life. When Peter packs for his European trip, he stuffs his belongings into Uncle Ben’s well-travelled suitcase.
Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5.
