2020 Corvette Convertible: First LookChevrolet

The C8 Corvette has a removable roof panel as before, but Chevrolet's new mid-engine sports car will get a proper convertible version, too. After the mid-engine Corvette Stingray coupe was revealed tonight in California, Chevy previewed the upcoming drop-top version of the C8 on video.

It appears the C8 convertible will have a retractable roof panel that folds under a tonneau cover similar to that of a Ferrari 488 Spider or McLaren 570S Spyder. Where the coupe has a hatchback with a glass cover revealing the new Vette's 495-hp 6.2-liter V-8, the convertible's engine will be obscured by this tonneau. Behind the driver and passenger seat are two flying buttresses, but otherwise, the look here is much the same as the standard C8.

Chevrolet didn't announce any additional info on the C8 convertible tonight, but we can speculate on pricing. GM product head Mark Reuss announced that the C8 coupe would start at under $60,000. Chevrolet charges an extra $4500 for the C7 Corvette convertible, so we can assume the base price for the C8 convertible will be under $65,000. A Porsche 718 Boxster starts at under $60,000 now, but to get one with anything near the Corvette's 495 horsepower, you'd have to opt for the near-$100,000 Boxster Spyder.

We don't expect to wait long for the C8 convertible either. With recent Corvettes, the convertible has followed the coupe quite closely. Considering it's an important bodystyle for the Corvette, we bet GM is not going to drag its feet getting the C8 convertible to market.
