Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like North American Construction Group (TSE:NOA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

North American Construction Group's Improving Profits

In the last three years North American Construction Group's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. North American Construction Group boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from CA$1.45 to CA$1.75, in the last year. That's a 20% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Unfortunately, North American Construction Group's revenue dropped 30% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 8.2% to 14%. That falls short of ideal.

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that North American Construction Group insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have CA$37m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. That amounts to 9.8% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

Does North American Construction Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, North American Construction Group is a growing business, which is what I like to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on.
