Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Old Line Bancshares (NASDAQ:OLBK), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Old Line Bancshares's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Impressively, Old Line Bancshares has grown EPS by 24% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of Old Line Bancshares's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Old Line Bancshares's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 47% to US$107m. That's a real positive.

Are Old Line Bancshares Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

Despite -US$28.2k worth of sales, Old Line Bancshares insiders have overwhelmingly been buying the stock, spending US$385k on purchases in the last twelve months. On balance, to me, this signals their optimism. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Director Thomas Graham for US$55k worth of shares, at about US$27.44 per share.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Old Line Bancshares insiders have a valuable investment in the business. With a whopping US$56m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. At 13% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.
