Here's Why I Think Praj Industries (NSE:PRAJIND) Is An Interesting Stock

Simply Wall St

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Praj Industries (NSE:PRAJIND). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Praj Industries's Improving Profits

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Praj Industries's EPS soared from ₹2.44 to ₹4.05, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 66%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Praj Industries is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.1 percentage points to 5.3%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Praj Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Praj Industries shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at ₹6.8b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 35% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

Is Praj Industries Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors like me, Praj Industries's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Praj Industries by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
