Here's Why I Think Redco Properties Group (HKG:1622) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Redco Properties Group (HKG:1622). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Redco Properties Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Redco Properties Group's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Redco Properties Group has grown its trailing twelve month EPS from CN¥0.27 to CN¥0.29, in the last year. That amounts to a small improvement of 6.8%.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Redco Properties Group is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.2 percentage points to 28%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Redco Properties Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Redco Properties Group insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 75% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping CN¥8.3b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations between CN¥7.1b and CN¥23b, like Redco Properties Group, the median CEO pay is around CN¥4.2m.

The Redco Properties Group CEO received CN¥2.5m in compensation for the year ending December 2018. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Redco Properties Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for Redco Properties Group is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Redco Properties Group, but the pretty picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Redco Properties Group by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
