Here's why you won't see Harvey Weinstein's mugshot (UPDATED)

Harvey Weinstein’s arrest Friday — seven months after women began publicly accusing him of sexual misconduct — was well documented by photographers.

They captured images of Weinstein being taken into custody at a New York police station, then a nearby courthouse, where he was charged with first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree in incidents involving two separate women. The former Hollywood power player could face up to 25 years in prison, according to Reuters.

But one photo that we won’t see, at least not officially, is Weinstein’s mugshot. The New York Police Department, which made the arrest, told Yahoo Entertainment: “The NYPD does not release the mugshot of anyone arrested in New York City.”

Still, photographers caught most of Weinstein’s surrender. He was smiling at times, as he arrived at a police station with books, including a biography of Hollywood director Elia Kazan under his arm.

Later, at his arraignment in a nearby courthouse, Weinstein was formally charged. His bail was set at $1 million, an amount that his lawyers paid immediately, according to the New York Times. Weinstein was also ordered to wear a GPS monitoring system, stay in New York state or Connecticut, and hand over his passport before being released.

Weinstein’s attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said in a statement to CNN that the producer “has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone. Nothing about today’s proceedings changes Mr. Weinstein’s position. He has entered a plea of not guilty and fully expects to be exonerated.”

Brafman told reporters outside the courthouse that he would move to dismiss the charges against his client.
