Heroku queues up connector to pump data to/from Salesforce.com

The Heruko connector, which will sync up customer data between Salesforce.com and the Heroku Platform as a Service is now available.

In beta since it was announced as part of Salesforce1 in November at Dreamforce, the product is termed a bridge between corporate Salesforce.com information — managed by Oracle databases — and data used in customer-facing applications which is managed in Postgres.

“This is sort of like a Dropbox or iCloud for these platforms — it’s a set it and forge it model,” said Adam Gross, head of product at San Francisco-based Heroku. This is all part of Salesforce.com’s — which is Heroku’s parent company — way to rationalize its “two-PaaS” strategy. Salesforce.com’s Force.com PaaS is the legacy PaaS — used to develop internal employee-facing applications — while Heroku has now been deemed the preferred PaaS for Web-based customer-facing apps, as Heroku President Tod Nielsen explained at Dreamforce.

If that seems sort of forced, Gross said even if Salesforce.com was starting from scratch — if its own Force.com did not exist — it would probably go this route.

“There are something like 40 different Javascript toolkits for creating a web page. There are so many because they’re all optimized for different use cases — maybe real-time chat, a mapping tool, e-commerce. We’re saying there are platforms for enterprise app and platforms for customer apps. Those things are different but can be unified,” Gross said.

This product is part of the overall Salesforce1 Connected Customer App Package, pricing depends on resources used.
