According to the retailer, it will be giving its workers additional hours in 2017. This will allow Walmart to keep employees on-hand to help with the surge of shoppers without adding more workers through holiday hiring. This is the same strategy that the company used for 2016.

Walmart notes that customers responded positively to its plan to skip out on holiday hiring in 2016. It’s possible that the system works better for the company because it gives customers access to employees that have worked for the store regularly and may be more helpful than seasonal hires.

The retailer also says that the additional hours that its employees will work will give them access to new positions. This includes having them work as cashiers, stockers, personal shoppers and other positions at the company.

“We are also bringing back the very popular Holiday Helper and increasing the number of Helpers we have in stores this season,” Judith McKenna, Chief Operating Officer for Walmart U.S, said in a statement. “These associates are dedicated to helping customers get through the stores faster by finding the shortest checkout line, opening registers as needed and will even quickly grab items customers might have forgotten.”

Other retailers are also preparing for the busy shopping season.  However, they will be sticking with the tradition of holiday hiring to bring in extra employees. Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) is planning to hire 100,000 seasonal employees in 2017. Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) says that it will add 80,000 employees to its workforce for the holidays.
