Hollyoaks bosses have announced that Mercedes McQueen will be shot in a shock new whodunit storyline.

Fans will watch in horror this autumn as Mercedes is gunned down by a mystery culprit, sparking an intriguing new mystery in the village.

Viewers have seen Mercedes' behaviour spiral out of control in recent months, as she has cheated on her husband Sylver with bad boy Liam Donovan and neglected her responsibilities to son Bobby.

Mercedes also knocked down Grace Black in a hit and run, keeping quiet when the finger of blame was pointed at innocent Harry Thompson in the aftermath. However, Hollyoaks bosses always planned for Mercy's antics to lead to an even bigger storyline.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Hollyoaks' executive producer Bryan Kirkwood confirmed that Mercedes' shooting will air in the fallout from this year's October stunt.

Kirkwood told us: "What is exciting this year is that the stunt week follows directly into an equally brilliant week, with 'Who Shot Mercedes McQueen?'

"So it's a really huge October, as all of those terrible decisions that Mercedes has been making all year, lead to people finally wanting payback.

"It's a whodunit. It will play out for a couple of months, keeping the audience guessing. Some of our most popular characters are in that line-up.

"What I'm really chuffed about is the consequences of the shooting keep on coming and it takes us into next year."

Kirkwood had first teased this storyline in a chat with Digital Spy earlier this year – and he may have even dropped some early hints of who the suspects might be.

Speaking to us in July, he said: "Mercedes is going to get her comeuppance later in the year, in ways that I can't go into right now.

"The decisions that Mercedes has made over the past few months – the good ones and the terrible ones – are all building to one of the biggest chapters in her life.

"That includes the love triangle with Liam and Sylver, the lies about Grace's hit and run, and the drug-taking."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
