Here’s How Your Horoscope Could Sabotage You At Work (& What To Do About It)

Abbey Maxbauer

Have you ever left work thinking about all the things you did that day and found yourself wondering, “Why am I like this?” If you have, the stars and planets may have an answer for you.

With each astrological sign come different tendencies, both positive and negative. And while some can make you a great employee, others have the potential to trip you up at work. Luckily, with a little bit of self-awareness and effort, it's easy to overcome the counterproductive tendencies and lean into the ones that make you great.

Though it might seem sexier to focus on things like love horoscopes and compatibility, you likely spend most of your waking hours at work, and your performance there can have a big impact on your quality of life. So it's important to consider the ways that astrology could affect your professional life just as much as your personal one.

Ahead, we've put together a list of potential workplace pitfalls for each astrological sign. Though these horoscopes are based on your sun sign (which is most likely the sign you already know, as it corresponds to the month-long timeframe within which you were born), it wouldn't hurt to check out your moon sign and rising sign, too.

A quick refresher: The sun sign informs your ego and identity, while the moon sign has to do with the emotional and interior self. The rising sign informs how you interact with the outside world, as well as how you’re perceived by others. Naturally, all three are important to your professional life.

If you've ever worried about how you might be coming off at work or want to reflect on how you can be a better coworker, boss, or employee, then read on to learn about your sign's potential challenges — and how to deal with them.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

One word: steamroller.

Your excitement about a project can be infectious, but it can also make you a bad collaborator (think Leslie Knope on Parks & Rec).

You may have trouble listening to other people’s ideas when you’re stoked about your own — but that’s a problem you can totally fix. In brainstorming sessions and meetings, try to listen twice as much as you talk.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Hey there, workaholic.

Ever “just drop by” your office on the weekend and end up staying for hours? Prone to eating lunch at your desk? That lack of boundaries is actually making you less efficient.

Try to get in the habit of grabbing lunch with a coworker, and remember to make social plans for yourself on evenings and weekends. Your brain needs a break!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Ever start doing something work-related and then end up reading the Wikipedia page for Armie Hammer’s grandpa?

Your curiosity is great, but not when you have trouble staying on task. Try keeping a to-do list and set notifications that remind you to look at it — that way you can be jolted out of internet rabbit holes before you get in too deep.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

You’re generous and empathetic, but if you don’t set boundaries, you could end up being the office pushover.

There’s nothing wrong with generosity, but make sure that Susan from IT is grabbing your coffee as often as you’re picking up hers. When it comes to limiting extra work, start with the easy stuff. Maybe someone wants you to proofread their son’s kindergarten application — respond by mentioning how swamped you are, and ask if anyone else could handle the task.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Constructive criticism can be tough for you to hear. You want to feel like you’re good at your job, and you want others to see you that way, too. But remember: Professional feedback is not a personal attack.

When someone tells you how to improve, they’re trying to help you. And if keeping that in mind isn’t enough, make a list of the things you do really well at work. There’s nothing wrong with a little self-engineered confidence boost.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

You’re a perfectionist, which can often work in your favor (see: Beyoncé’s whole life). But holding yourself and others to an impossibly high standard can be an unhappy way to live.

Allow yourself a margin of error, and remember that the people you work with are more than their jobs. You never know what external (or internal) stressors might be causing someone to slip up.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

You might be wasting your time trying to charm everyone you meet.

The social sphere of your office is important, and it’s natural to care about fitting in. But don’t forget you have a job to do. If you’re too focused on winning over the unfriendly guy who sits by the printer, you might be expending energy on the wrong thing — or extending your work day unnecessarily.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

“It’s fine, I got it” can sometimes become a Scorpio workplace mantra.

You have trouble asking for help, saying no, and delegating. But when you swallow up a big task whole, you likely feel a little overworked or under-appreciated, and the feeling grows each time this happens.

It doesn’t need to be this way! Don’t be a martyr. Mention your workload to your boss, or ask if someone is available to aid you.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

The world is big, and you, a Sagittarius, want to experience everything. Also, you may want to quit every job two weeks after starting.

You’re curious, restless, and a bit of a commitment-phobe. You’d likely rather be traveling than working. The grass always looks greener, but what you really need is some more green. So try to stick with your current gig, if it’s not too painful, and quench your thirst for adventure on evenings and days off.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

If you work hard but always feel like you could — and should — be doing more, you might be a Capricorn.

Self-guilting is a sign that you need to reframe your thinking, because guilt won’t make you any more accomplished. Take some time to figure out what it would take (within reason) for you to feel satisfied with your work at the end of the day, and make it happen. There’s no reason you can’t have that feeling.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

You think outside the box, and you have a little trouble with people who aren’t on the same wavelength — particularly if they’re supervising you.

It’s hard to be the smartest person in the room, but unfortunately that’s often how it feels to be an Aquarius. Your perceptions aren’t always right, so pick your battles, and try to keep an open mind.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

As one of the most creative signs in the zodiac, you probably don’t find much joy in busywork. But your instinct to spend the most time on creative tasks could get you in trouble. No one needs you to spend three hours on the perfect birthday card for Daryl in payroll!

You should still lean into the things you’re excited about, but maybe give yourself a time limit on those tasks.
