iCAD (NASDAQ:ICAD) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 156% Share Price Gain

Simply Wall St

iCAD, Inc. (NASDAQ:ICAD) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 21% in the last quarter. In contrast, the return over three years has been impressive. The share price marched upwards over that time, and is now 156% higher than it was. After a run like that some may not be surprised to see prices moderate. The fundamental business performance will ultimately dictate whether the top is in, or if this is a stellar buying opportunity.

Because iCAD made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last three years iCAD has grown its revenue at 4.4% annually. Considering the company is losing money, we think that rate of revenue growth is uninspiring. In comparison, the share price rise of 37% per year over the last three years is pretty impressive. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. It seems likely that the market is pretty optimistic about iCAD, given it is losing money.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

It's good to see that iCAD has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 57% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 20% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for iCAD you should know about.
