Ill., Will County take legal action over oil mist

CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow are taking legal action against Exxon Mobil Corp. over the release of oil mist at a northern Illinois refinery.

They filed a complaint on Wednesday seeking a preliminary injunction requiring the company to investigate the cause of the release and submit a detailed schedule to make improvements. They also want Exxon to clean up any environmental or property damage.

The mist was accidentally released from the coker unit at the company's Channahon Township refinery on Oct. 19. The oil mist fell onto homes, farms and a creek within a four-mile radius and caused authorities to close a road near the plant because of slippery conditions.

The company says it apologizes for the release and is cooperating with regulators.
