Can You Imagine How China YuHua Education's (HKG:6169) Shareholders Feel About The 16% Share Price Increase?

Simply Wall St

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. To wit, the China YuHua Education Corporation Limited (HKG:6169) share price is 16% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around -6.6% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year China YuHua Education grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 61%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 16% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on China YuHua Education, despite the growth. Interesting.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for China YuHua Education the TSR over the last year was 20%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that China YuHua Education shareholders have gained 20% over the last year, including dividends. A substantial portion of that gain has come in the last three months, with the stock up 37% in that time. This suggests the company is continuing to win over new investors.
