Imagine Holding CRH Medical (TSE:CRH) Shares While The Price Zoomed 479% Higher

Simply Wall St

We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. To wit, the CRH Medical Corporation (TSE:CRH) share price has soared 479% over five years. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. On the other hand, we note it's down 10.0% in about a month.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, CRH Medical actually saw its EPS drop 0.2% per year. So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 36% per year is probably viewed as evidence that CRH Medical is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 1.7% in the last year, CRH Medical shareholders lost 32%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 42%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
