Imagine Owning Maxar Technologies (NYSE:MAXR) And Trying To Stomach The 94% Share Price Drop

Simply Wall St

Some stocks are best avoided. We don’t wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Maxar Technologies Inc. (NYSE:MAXR) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 94%. And it’s not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 90% in the last year. Furthermore, it’s down 63% in about a quarter. That’s not much fun for holders. We note that the company has reported results fairly recently; and the market is hardly delighted. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It’s a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it’s worth keeping in mind there’s more to life than money, anyway.

To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

In the last half decade Maxar Technologies saw its share price fall as its EPS declined below zero. At present it’s hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. But we would generally expect a lower price, given the situation.

It’s good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That’s a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective

Investors in Maxar Technologies had a tough year, with a total loss of 89% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 3.9%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year’s performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 42% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should ‘buy when there is blood on the streets’, but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses.
