Imagine Owning StealthGas (NASDAQ:GASS) While The Price Tanked 67%

Simply Wall St

StealthGas Inc. (NASDAQ:GASS) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 18% in the last quarter. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 67% after a long stretch. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. We'd err towards caution given the long term under-performance.

Given that StealthGas didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last half decade, StealthGas saw its revenue increase by 5.6% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. It's likely this weak growth has contributed to an annualised return of 20% for the last five years. We'd want to see proof that future revenue growth is likely to be significantly stronger before getting too interested in StealthGas. When a stock falls hard like this, some investors like to add the company to a watchlist (in case the business recovers, longer term).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 12% in the last year, StealthGas shareholders lost 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 20% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize.
