Tesla’s Futuristic Door Handles Blamed for Death in Fiery Wreck

Omar Awan, a 48-year-old anesthesiologist, was driving his leased Tesla in February when he lost control on a south Florida parkway and the car slammed into a palm tree, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in state court in Broward County. A police officer couldn't open the doors because the handles were retracted and bystanders watched helplessly as the car filled with smoke and flames, according to the complaint, which alleges the fire originated with the car's battery. The door handles on the Model S are flush with the car and pop out -- “auto-present” in the words of Tesla -- when they detect that the key fob is nearby.

Tesla surprises with quarterly profit on record deliveries, shares up 21%

Tesla on Wednesday posted a cash balance increase to $5.3 billion (£4.11 billion). The third-quarter results are an important milestone for Tesla and redemption for Chief Executive Elon Musk who had to step down as chairman after a series of scandals and investor doubts about Tesla's ability to withstand competition from larger, better capitalized global rivals. Tesla's gross margins, an important profit indicator for investors, surpassed expectations and Tesla said it was "highly confident" in exceeding the low end of its yearly global vehicle delivery goal.

Goldman: A Major Oil Price Rally Is On The Horizon

The investment bank says that slowing U.S. shale production growth combined with a shortage of investment in long-term projects will lead to a new boom. Goldman lowered its forecast for U.S. oil production growth to 0.7 million barrels per day (mb/d) in 2020, down sharply from its 1 mb/d forecast previously. Interestingly, Goldman attributed the downward revision not just to a slowdown in drilling, but also to “updated longer-term decline rates to be consistent with play-to-date results,” which is a complicated way of saying shale wells are not performing as well as previously anticipated.

Boeing Max Design, Airline Maintenance Faulted in Lion Air Crash

Design flaws in Boeing Co.'s 737 Max, a failure to share vital information with pilots and airline maintenance stumbles contributed to last year's crash of Lion Air Flight 610, which killed 189 people, investigators have concluded. In a nine-point presentation to victims' families prior to the Friday release of a formal crash report, the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee criticized the jet's certification, saying that a now infamous flight-control mechanism was approved based on incorrect assumptions. The Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System has been implicated separately in the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max in March that claimed 157 lives.
