Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is strong again today at 7.8 million contracts already, with major indexes and ETFs dominating the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 1.5 million options traded, led by 880,000 puts. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 366,000, with calls outpacing puts by more than 2 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has seen 298,000 contracts change hands, with a put/call ratio of 5 to 1. Following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 266,000, with 155,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 225,000 options trading, with 124,000 puts.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 164,000 contracts turning over, with 102,000 calls. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) sees 112,000 options trading as puts slightly outpace calls. The iShares Japan Fund (EWJ) and the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) both have 110,000 options traded, the former with 74,000 calls and the latter with 74,000 puts.
