Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is again increasing its pace at 6 million contracts so far today, as the typical names top the action in the indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 926,000 options traded, led by 552,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 226,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outpacing puts by more than 4 to 1. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 200,000 and a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has seen 181,000 contacts turn over, with calls barely outpacing puts. Following are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options at 161,000, also with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 127,000 contracts trading, with 71,000 calls. The iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has 100,000 options moving, with 57,000 calls.

Just over 76,000 options trade in the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF), with 59,000 calls. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has 65,000 options traded, evenly split between calls and puts.
