Index, ETF option volumes near midday

More than 6.2 million options have traded so far today, led by the typical indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.

More than 1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with 600,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 245,000 options traded, with 147,000 calls. Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) options at 210,000, dominated by 174,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 150,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outpacing puts about 2 to 1. Following closely are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 133,000, with 98,000 puts.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 75,000 contracts turn over, with 43,000 calls. Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) options at 74,000, with calls slightly outpacing puts.
