Index, ETF option volumes at midday

Total option volume is relatively light at 5.2 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 666,000 options traded, with puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has seen 235,000 turn over, with 146,000 puts. Following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 160,000, also with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 126,000 contracts changing hands, with puts outnumbering calls by 5 to 1. Not far behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options at 113,000, with 68,000 calls.

The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) just barely breaks 100,000, evenly split between calls and puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) ha 90,000 options traded, with calls slightly outpacing puts.
