Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is strong at more than 6.6 million contracts so far today, with quite bullish sentiment in the major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 727,000 contracts traded, with 414,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have turned over 272,000 times, with calls barely outpacing puts. Following closely are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts at 258,000 as puts just outnumber calls.

Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options at 223,000, with 142,000 calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 204,000 contracts changing hands, also with more calls than puts.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has just 100,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of almost 2 to 1. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 87,000 options moving, with calls outpacing puts by 2 to 1.
