Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume doesn't even top 3 million contracts so far today, while the typical names lead the action in index and ETF trading, accoriding to optionMONSTER's data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) sees 508,000 options trading, 293,000 of which are puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) has traded 107,000 times contracts. Just behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) with 102,000 changing hands.

The S&P 500 Index (SPX) options have changed hands just 71,000 times. The SDPR Energy Fund (NYSEArca:XLE) has seen only 40,000 options turn over, almost all of them puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) has seen 30,000 contracts move, most of them calls.

The SPDR Financial Fund (NYSEArca:XLF) trades 24,000 contracts, and the Market Vectors Gold Miners Fund (NYSEArca:GDX) has 21,000, mostly calls.
