Avengers: Infinity War is shaping up to have the biggest superhero cast ever, so it stands to reason that it will be epic in length, too.

Co-director Joe Russo has confirmed that the film is on track to be the longest entry in the MCU yet.

"The current cut is over two and a half [hours]," he told Collider.

"Most of it's a movie you could show, but there's still a lot of work left to be done, I still have a couple of scenes that we haven't finished from Avengers 3 that I'm shooting in the next few months with my brother, and it's certainly gonna be a film that lives in the two and a half hour, two and a half hour-plus range."

Marvel's longest film is currently Captain America: Civil War at 2 hours and 27 minutes, as well as having the biggest superhero cast until Infinity War comes along.

Russo offered his justification for the run time, which sounds as though it could even overtake Batman v Superman's 2 hours and 31 minutes (though probably not the three-hour extended version).

"We have to, I mean it's a culmination event," he said. "We've gotta take 10 years of storytelling in this Marvel narrative experiment that's been going on since Iron Man, and we have to take all these disparate tones, disparate themes, motivations, and we have to pull them together in a unified narrative and write the final chapters of the book.

"There's no way you could do that with all these characters in under that running length."

The first Infinity War poster has revealed new looks for both Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans).

Robert Downey Jr, Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Benicio del Toro, Tom Holland and Paul Rudd will also feature in the movie.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in the UK on April 27, 2018, and in the US on May 4, 2018.
