Have Insiders Been Buying AA plc (LON:AA.) Shares?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So before you buy or sell AA plc (LON:AA.), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Buying?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AA

CEO & Executive Director Simon Breakwell made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£99k worth of shares at a price of UK£0.97 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of UK£0.51. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

In the last twelve months insiders paid UK£379k for 509k shares purchased. AA may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. They paid about UK£0.75 on average. This is nice to see since it implies that insiders might see value around current prices. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Our data isn't picking up on much insider ownership at AA, though insiders do hold about UK£415k worth of shares. This level of insider ownership is notably low, and not very encouraging.
