Are Insiders Buying Micron Solutions, Inc. (NYSEMKT:MICR) Stock?

Erna Eldridge

We’ve lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Micron Solutions, Inc. (NYSEMKT:MICR).

What Is Insider Selling?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We don’t think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Colombia University study found that ‘insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers’.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Micron Solutions

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman of the Board Jason Chambers bought US$74k worth of shares at a price of US$3.20 per share. So it’s clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price. It’s very possible they regret the purchase, but it’s more likely they are bullish about the company. That purchase may suggest an expectation of positive returns over the long term. Jason Chambers was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Micron Solutions Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Micron Solutions insiders own about US$2.6m worth of shares (which is 29% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Micron Solutions Insiders?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss last year, which makes us a little cautious. Insiders likely see value in Micron Solutions shares, given these transactions (along with notable insider ownership of the company). Along with insider transactions, I recommend checking if Micron Solutions is growing revenue. This free chart of historic revenue and earnings should make that easy.
