Are Insiders Buying Xenia Hotels & Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:XHR) Stock?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Xenia Hotels & Resorts, Inc. (NYSE:XHR).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Xenia Hotels & Resorts Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Chairman of the Board & CEO Marcel Verbaas made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$100k worth of shares at a price of US$19.99 each. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$20.64 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Xenia Hotels & Resorts share holders is that an insider was buying at near the current price. Marcel Verbaas was the only individual insider to buy over the year.
