Get Inspired By 5 R29 Editors’ Holiday Makeup Selfies

Andrea Cheng

For some, it takes very little convincing to break into that stack of glitter-packed highlighters, the eyeshadow palettes that house the prettiest candy-colored pigments, the tubes of lipsticks colored in punchy hues. But when you're running late and have just five precious minutes to spare, the most you have time for are the handful of solid, dependable, and supremely uninteresting essentials. Which makes the holiday season — a calendar of evening events that encourage a full-on beat — the perfect excuse to go forth and live out all your wildest makeup dreams.

Throw red and green together because why not! Roll around in glitter and say you were inspired by tinsel! Subvert makeup rules by doing a bold eye and a bold lip! There are no rules.

With that in mind, we partnered with Ulta Beauty to share how R29 editors are going all out for the holidays. Some are taking a subtler approach with a glammed-up version of their everyday looks, while others are piling on the shine. Ahead, take a look at their festive holiday makeup selfies for inspiration.

"I’m more of a subtle-with-a-hint-of-sparkle type of gal, so I wanted to mimic that for my holiday look. I like an even, glowy base, which Juvia’s Place The Saharan Vol. 2 Blush Palette, layered on top of my favorite foundation, made possible. I used the shades Bee and Sola to transform my face from flat to fabulous, and I went a little extra on the highlighter with the shade Zoba, because you can never have too much. The real treat was on my eyelids, where the MAC Star Sighting Palette lived. I applied the taupe shade Wedge all over my lid and added a combination of Let’s Roll and Star Violet into my crease to make it all pop. A touch of North Star in the inner corner was like the star on top of the Christmas tree."

"For my holiday look, I wanted to create something that was minimal yet bold. To achieve that, I went for a dramatic winged liner using NYX’s Epic Ink pen and added some shimmer to my waterline with a frosty shade from NYX’s Ultimate Shadow Palette. To frame my eyes, I filled my brows with NYX’s Micro Brow pencil in Ash Brown, and because I can’t go anywhere without my signature vibrant lip, UOMA’s Boss Gloss in Class was a no-brainer. I topped off my look with Juvia’s Place The Tribe Highlighter Vol. 3 for a golden glow. I love this look because it took me literally 15 minutes to put together, which is a win for a low-maintenance gal like myself. All glam and no fuss, because ain't nobody got time for that."

"My normal makeup routine is beyond basic — a few strokes of Urban Decay's Perversion Mascara and BITE's Lip Mask, and I'm out the door running to the train. But as much as I love the simplicity of my morning routine, I love to go glam for a night out (in all honesty, getting ready is my favorite part). I wanted to create a look that wasn't too far away from my norm. Me but with more drama. I started with a medium-coverage foundation that I like to dab around my jawline (and everywhere else) to cover up last year's acne scars. Hyperpigmentation, am I right? I used Cover FX's Power Play Foundation and it gave me the perfect matte face, my preference for nighttime activities. I tend to lose a lot of my color when the sun decides to set at 4 p.m., and because I'm not the biggest fan of the visible lack of vitamin D, I will always dust bareMinerals Warmth All Over over my face and neck to bring back the missing melanin.

"Because of my deep-set eyes, my eyeshadow is only seen when I blink, so I prefer eyeshadow with sparkle. I layered Juvia's Place The Saharan Palette's Senegal over Kasina for a sprinkle of glitter and topped it off with a few swipes of Urban Decay's Perversion Mascara (the closest thing to giving me falsies without actual fake eyelashes).

"After years of experimenting with pinks and oranges, I found that I look my best (and feel my most confident) in a darker lip. This Beauty Bakerie Cocklava is a highly pigmented wine color that suits my complexion and is small enough to slip into any purse, décolletage, or coat pocket for a night out. Best part about this look? I did it in less than 20 minutes."

"A pop of color with a dash of glitter was the inspiration for my holiday look this year. MAC's Ruby Woo will always be a staple lip for the holidays. Typically, I go for a nice honey-gold highlighted look, but this year I gave silver a go with the Stila Stars Aligned eyeshadow set. The liquid eye glitters are trending this season, and I love how simple yet bold the glitters are. One to two strokes across the lids did the trick. To draw more attention to the eyes, I added NYX white eyeliner on the waterline. White liner on brown skin will always make someone do a double-take. If a makeup look takes any more than 30 minutes, you can count me out. The goal here is to walk into 2020 dripped in glitter — cheers!"

"I wanted to capture the essence of the holiday spirit with my eye look. While using the Morphe 39L Hit The Lights Palette, I chose to focus on two colors: Don’t Stop and Flirt Alert. I always love to wet my eyeshadow brush to pick up more pigment, and in doing so, I was able pack on Don’t Stop on the outer corners of my eye, blending outward for more drama. Next, I wet my other eyeshadow brush to pick up Flirt Alert, which I applied to the inner corner and the middle of my lid. (Make sure to dab, as opposed to swipe, to avoid muddling up colors.) To finish my eye look, I used NYX's Epic Ink Liner. And I brought my holiday look together with Clinique's Even Better Foundation, Flesh blush, and MAC's E For Effortless lipstick."
