Introducing CITIC Envirotech (SGX:CEE), The Stock That Slid 55% In The Last Five Years

We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. For example, after five long years the CITIC Envirotech Ltd. (SGX:CEE) share price is a whole 55% lower. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 46%. The silver lining is that the stock is up 1.6% in about a week.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Looking back five years, both CITIC Envirotech's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 31% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 15% compound annual share price fall. So investors might expect EPS to bounce back -- or they may have previously foreseen the EPS decline. The high P/E ratio of 70.37 suggests that shareholders believe earnings will grow in the years ahead.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for CITIC Envirotech the TSR over the last 5 years was -52%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

CITIC Envirotech shareholders are down 45% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 3.1%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 14% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how CITIC Envirotech scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
