When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For instance, the price of IHS Markit Ltd. (NYSE:INFO) stock is up an impressive 108% over the last five years. It's also good to see the share price up 11% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 8.2% in the last three months.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, IHS Markit managed to grow its earnings per share at 5.7% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 16% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 76.11.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
