Looking for broad exposure to the Industrials - Engineering and Construction segment of the equity market? You should consider the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 01/31/2006.

The S&P Homebuilders Select Industry Index represents the homebuilding sub-industry portion of the S&P Total Markets Index. The S&P TMI tracks all the U.S. common stocks listed on the NYSE, AMEX, NASDAQ National Market and NASDAQ Small Cap exchanges. The Homebuilders Index is a modified equal weight index.
Expense ratios are an important factor in the return of an ETF and in the long term, cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive counterparts, other things remaining the same.
Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.35%, making it one of the least expensive products in the space.
It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.53%.
Sector Exposure and Top Holdings
While ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.
This ETF has heaviest allocation in the Consumer Discretionary sector--about 62% of the portfolio, followed by Industrials.
Looking at individual holdings, Nvr Inc. (NVR) accounts for about 3.84% of total assets, followed by Lennar Corporation Class A (LEN) and Floor & Decor Holdings Inc. Class A (FND).
The top 10 holdings account for about 36.96% of total assets under management.
Performance and Risk
Year-to-date, the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF has added roughly 40.50% so far, and was up about 41.71% over the last 12 months (as of 11/05/2021). XHB has traded between $53.51 and $79.46 in this past 52-week period.
The ETF has a beta of 1.40 and standard deviation of 32.38% for the trailing three-year period, making it a high risk choice in the space. With about 37 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers.
SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. Because of this, XHB is an excellent option for investors seeking exposure to the Industrials ETFs segment of the market. Invesco Dynamic Building & Construction ETF has $284.63 million in assets, iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF has $2.76 billion. PKB has an expense ratio of 0.59% and ITB charges 0.41%.
