These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Ulta Beauty, Inc. (NASDAQ:ULTA) share price is 73% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 36% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 35% in the last three years.
So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 1 year and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Ulta Beauty grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 161%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 73% increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Ulta Beauty as it was before. This could be an opportunity.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Ulta Beauty shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 73% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 9% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Ulta Beauty better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Ulta Beauty has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of companies we expect will grow earnings.
