Investors Who Bought Advicenne (EPA:ADVIC) Shares A Year Ago Are Now Down 20%

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Unfortunately the Advicenne S.A. (EPA:ADVIC) share price slid 20% over twelve months. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 13%. Advicenne may have better days ahead, of course; we've only looked at a one year period. Furthermore, it's down 19% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.

Because Advicenne is loss-making, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Advicenne grew its revenue by 211% over the last year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. The share price drop of 20% over twelve months would be considered disappointing by many, so you might argue the company is getting little credit for its impressive revenue growth. On the bright side, if this company is moving profits in the right direction, top-line growth like that could be an opportunity. Our monkey brains haven't evolved to think exponentially, so humans do tend to underestimate companies that have exponential growth.

A Different Perspective

While Advicenne shareholders are down 20% for the year, the market itself is up 13%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. With the stock down 19% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Basically, most investors should be wary of buying into a poor-performing stock, unless the business itself has clearly improved.
