Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. To wit, the Inovalon Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:INOV) share price managed to fall 55% over five long years. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 35% in a month. But this could be related to poor market conditions -- stocks are down 29% in the same time.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Inovalon Holdings moved from a loss to profitability. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 9.6% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.
You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on Inovalon Holdings
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Inovalon Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 13% over the last year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 15% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Inovalon Holdings (at least 1 which is concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
