Investors in WiMi Hologram Cloud (NASDAQ:WIMI) have unfortunately lost 73% over the last three years

As an investor, mistakes are inevitable. But really bad investments should be rare. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of WiMi Hologram Cloud Inc. (NASDAQ:WIMI); the share price is down a whopping 73% in the last three years. That might cause some serious doubts about the merits of the initial decision to buy the stock, to put it mildly. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 54% in a year. On the other hand the share price has bounced 8.7% over the last week.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

Check out our latest analysis for WiMi Hologram Cloud

Because WiMi Hologram Cloud made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last three years, WiMi Hologram Cloud saw its revenue grow by 24% per year, compound. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. So on the face of it we're really surprised to see the share price down 20% a year in the same time period. You'd want to take a close look at the balance sheet, as well as the losses. Sometimes fast revenue growth doesn't lead to profits. If the company is low on cash, it may have to raise capital soon.

A Different Perspective

Over the last year, WiMi Hologram Cloud shareholders took a loss of 54%. In contrast the market gained about 3.9%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Shareholders have lost 20% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. We would be wary of buying into a company with unsolved problems, although some investors will buy into struggling stocks if they believe the price is sufficiently attractive. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand WiMi Hologram Cloud better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - WiMi Hologram Cloud has 3 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
