Jack Nicklaus watches grandson Gary Jr. hit hole-in-one at Masters Par 3 Contest

Jack Nicklaus celebrates with Tom Watson and Gary Player (L) after his grandson Gary (R) made a hole-in-one on the 9th hole during the Masters Par 3 Contest on Wednesday.

The Masters is full of pomp, circumstance and sometimes eye-rolling nostalgia.

Arriving annually on the heels of the NCAA tournament, it represents the ultimate dichotomy from the rowdy, beer-swilling, wing-eating realm of sports fandom.

But in the end, there’s a reason Masters week truly is one of the highlights of the sports calendar. It delivers.

Whether it’s Phil Mickelson miraculously hitting a ball buried in pine needles behind a tree, over the water and onto the green or Tiger Woods’ ball hanging on the lip of the cup before dropping on a dramatic chip, Augusta National rarely fails to provide drama.

On Wednesday, we got one of those moments, and the tournament hasn’t even started yet. Watch Gary Nicklaus Jr., grandson of six-time Masters winner Jack Nicklaus, on the ninth and final hole of the annual Par 3 Contest.

What a shot. And what a moment for Nicklaus to share with his grandson and old friends Tom Watson and Gary Player on hallowed ground.

Nicklaus put the moment into perspective on Twitter later in the day.

Good stuff.

Now, can we get to Thursday already?
