Jane Fonda rang in her 80th birthday in one of her freshest looks yet.

The actress threw a big bash over the weekend, and while the event was worthy of a glamorous gown, the ever-unpredictable Fonda instead went with a suit. It was a look that seemed to sprout from a high-end fashion collaboration between a Blues Brother and Jay Gatsby.

While this birthday party wasn’t as public as the star-studded soiree she had a few weeks ago to raise money for her foundation Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential, attendees like Chelsea Handler gave fans a sneak peek at this weekend’s party and the guest of honor’s outfit.

Handler posted a photo of herself and the Oscar winner at the event, which she deemed a “great f***ing party,” on Instagram. In the snap, Fonda is wearing black slacks, a white dress shirt, suspenders, and a loosened tie. Ever in character, Fonda had a jacket swung over her shoulder, and a fedora sat atop her head, making the look even more gangster than it was already.

Interior designer David Phoenix also shared shots from the Los Angeles event. In one, Fonda can be seen onstage in her fedora and suspenders, gripping an old-fashioned microphone. We can only imagine what was happening at that moment, but it looks like she was singing a song from Guys and Dolls. He also posted photos of the gorgeous floral cakes created for Fonda’s big night.

Bottom line: It looks like the activist and actress, who remarkably becomes an octogenarian on Dec. 21, was having a ball, which is exactly what she deserves.
