Japan and Gold: 2 ETFs to Watch on Outsized Volume

Zacks Equity Research

In the last trading session, U.S. stocks rallied led by a huge spike in crude oil prices and encouraging retail sales data. Among the top ETFs, SPY gained 2.06%, DIA moved up 2.03% while QQQ was up 1.52% on the day.

Two more specialized ETFs are worth noting as both saw trading volume that was far outside of normal. In fact, both these funds experienced volume levels that were more than double their average for the most recent trading session. This could make these ETFs the ones to watch out for in the days ahead to see if this trend of extra-interest continues:

NKY: Volume 7.01 times average

This Japan ETF was under the microscope on Friday as almost 179,000 shares moved hands. This compares to an average trading volume of 25,000 shares and came as NKY gained about 0.4% in the session.

The big move was largely the result of Cabinet Office data showing higher-than-expected annualized decrease of 1.4% on Japan’s GDP in the last quarter of 2015. This can have a big impact on Japan-based stocks like the ones we find in this ETF portfolio. NKY was down over 6.7% in the past one-month period. The fund currently has a Zacks ETF Rank #3 (Hold).

SGOL: Volume 6.92 times average

This gold bullion ETF was in focus on Friday as nearly 248,000 shares moved hands. This compares to an average trading volume of 36,000 shares and came as SGOL lost 0.6% in the session.

The movement can largely be blamed on decline in gold price from the one-year high set the day before. The scurry of investors towards safe-haven assets slowed down a bit as the markets recovered. In the last one-month period, SGOL rose about 13.1%.
