The Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is pleased to announce Jason Syvixay, Managing Director of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, is the recipient of the 2014 Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award (MCOY).

Since joining the Downtown BIZ in 2011, Syvixay's accomplishments include leading the creation of an annual CEO sleep out event and campaign to raise awareness for homelessness, and in working to transform a photograph into a Canada Post official stamp.

"Syvixay is a valued leader at the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, earning respect for his ability to generate conversations about and bring positive attention to his organization's brand and activities," said Jason Permanand, President of CPRS Manitoba. "Communications practitioners in other jurisdictions are adopting some of Jason's initiatives. Congratulations to a well-deserved recipient!"

Additionally, Syvixay has grown the BIZ's positive media hits by 342 per cent in his two year-tenure at the BIZ.

"I am very proud to serve our downtown and am humbled and thankful for this incredible honour," Syvixay said. "The Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award, to me, serves as a powerful reminder that our city and groups like CPRS are invested in harnessing the creative energy and potential of Winnipeggers, especially youth. We need to give young people role models to which we can point to and say, 'That person was able to do it. You can, too.' Now more than ever, I am inspired and motivated to continue leading the charge to get young people excited and to help activate them to take a role in the revitalization, promotion and celebration of our city."

Syvixay will be presented with the MCOY award and share insights into his team's accomplishments at a special luncheon event on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. Luncheon tickets can be purchased online at www.cprs.mb.ca.

CPRS Manitoba is proud to recognize the best in the profession. This year's recipient and all nominees demonstrated creativity and solid communications strategies. The award event is made possible through the generosity of principal sponsor, Marketwired.

History of CPRS Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award

CPRS Manitoba established the Manitoba Communicator of the Year Award to honour Manitoba leaders in business, political, non-profit and community organizations whose efforts in the previous one or two years have resulted in greater understanding of a specific issue, successful promotion of a cause, expert management of a crisis, or public's acceptance of an organization's mandate. Every year, the MCOY winner is selected by a panel of senior CPRS Manitoba members and public relations professionals. CPRS Manitoba gratefully thanks the 2014 jury, which consisted of Carl Radimer, APR, Maureen Fitzhenry and Terry Aseltine, APR.

Previous MCOY award recipients include Bill Peters of St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre (2013), Scott Brown of True North Sports and Entertainment (2012), Kevin Walters of Manitoba Homecoming (2011), Clare MacKay of The Forks North Portage Partnership (2010) and Heather Plett of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (2009). Inaugural MCOY winners were Gail Asper and Kim Jasper for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (2008).
