Johnson Redbook Index Rises 5.7%

On Wednesday the Johnson Redbook posted a 5.7% increase in chain store sales for the week ending on May 25. It was 50 basis points higher than the 5.2% growth for the week ending on May 18, but 320 basis points lower than the 8.9% growth for the first week of 2019 ending Jan. 5. The 8.9% growth was the highest so far this year.

On the heels of the report, shares of Walmart Inc. (WMT) were down 0.29% to $102.12 for a market capitalization of $292.79 billion at close on Wednesday. The share price of Walmart increased 10% so far this year.


The stock has a price-book ratio of 4.31 versus the industry median of 1.73, a price-sales ratio of 0.58 versus the industry median of 0.48 and a price-earnings ratio of 35.34 compared to the industry median of 18.85. The 52-week range is $81.81 to $106.21.

The forward dividend yield of Walmart is 2.07% versus the industry median of 2.22%.

Macy's Inc. (M) lost 0.48% on Wednesday, closing at $20.94 per share. The stock has a market capitalization of $6.46 billion. The share price has fallen 30% so far this year.

Macy's has a price-book ratio of 1.05 versus the industry median of 1.63, a price-sales ratio of 0.26 versus the industry median of 0.68 and a price-earnings ratio of 5.9 compared to the industry median of 19.95. The 52-week range is $20.7 to $41.99.

The forward dividend yield is 7.18% versus the industry median of 2.29%.

Shares of American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (AEO) dropped 6.3% on Wednesday to close at $17.7 for a market capitalization of $3.04 billion. American Eagle Outfitters has fallen 8% so far this year.

The stock has a price-book ratio of 2.44 versus the industry median of 1.63, a price-sales ratio of 0.8 compared to the industry median of 0.68 and a price-earnings ratio of 12.05 versus the industry median of 19.95. The 52-week range is $17 to $29.88.

The forward dividend yield is 2.91% compared to the industry median of 2.29%.
