Jon Gillies makes disgustingly good behind the back save (Video)
Calgary Flames goalie Jon Gillies made one of those “through the benefit of replay” saves against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night: Those saves that look good in real time, and then are revealed to be flippin’ extraordinary when fans finally catch the Jumbotron replay.
You know who used to make a lot of those saves? Miikka Kiprusoff. Well, another Calgary goalie is carrying on the tradition, as Gillies made an incredible behind the back save, snatching the puck out of the air without having an eye on it, unless he has some in the back of his head, in which case it wouldn’t matter because he’s wearing a mask, unless of course he cut small … you know what, just watch the save:
Said Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko after the game:
“The next TV timeout I went over to him and said ‘that was disgusting.’ I watched the replay, and was giving him some stick-taps on the other end. He’s good for one of those a game.”
Gillies is a 2012 third-round pick for the Flames, who played for Providence in the NCAA. He’s percolated in the AHL for the last two seasons, getting a cup of coffee with the Flames in 2017.
Whether he is the “Goalie Of The Future” for the organization remains a point of some debate, as Calgary has a few contenders for that throne. Which is the reason why the Mike Smith/Eddie Lack battery feels as stop-gap as it is, with someone with the skillies of Gillies waiting for his shot.
