The hits keep coming for one of the Washington Redskins’ most important players and one of the NFL’s most talented tight ends.

Rather than practicing with his teammates at training camp, Jordan Reed is in Charlotte visiting a toe specialist for a nagging big toe issue. Comcast SportsNet’s JP Finlay was the first on the news:

Reed was placed on the PUP list to start training camp, and he is yet to debut in camp for the Redskins, who are practicing in Richmond, Virginia.

The visit comes less than a week after head coach Jay Gruden declared the injury not serious. Per Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the meeting was pre-planned, and Reed hasn’t experienced any setbacks.

Ordinarily, this might not draw much attention, but given Reed’s injury history, this still warrants concern. Reed has missed 18 games over his four-year professional career, all spent with the Redskins. When Reed is healthy and on the field, he is one of the league’s most versatile weapons in the passing game. He posted 87 catches for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns across 14 games in 2015, when he made the Pro Bowl. That’s also the only year Reed has played more than 12 games in a single season.

The injury list for Reed is a long one. He has suffered five concussions in his short career, and he missed the final four games last year with a shoulder separation. He had surgery on his knee last offseason and has dealt with several other various lower-body injuries as well.

The Redskins still have options with Reed out of service in veterans Vernon Davis, Niles Paul and 2017 fifth-round pick Jeremy Sprinkle. They also signed E.J. Bibbs, who has had short stints with Cleveland and Jacksonville, on July 27.
