But there are so many other reasons why this chemical is a health risk. We spoke to Dr. Rosmy Barrios, MD, a medical advisor for the Health Reporter, who explains further the negative effects of benzene. She says that it can weaken your hair, eventually causing dry and brittle hair. Barrios adds, “Benzene is a potent irritant, so constant exposure can damage your hair follicles, resulting in hair loss and thinning.” Plus, it’s highly flammable.

When it comes to hair care products, you should pay close attention to what’s on the ingredients list. Barrios mentions that benzene may not be directly mentioned, so look out for its derivatives like Phenoxyethanol or terms like aromatic hydrocarbons which benzene is linked to.
