Kanye West Released a Behind-the-Scenes Trailer for His 'Jesus is King' Movie
Kanye’s promised new album Jesus is King may be delayed until further notice, but it seems that his IMAX concert film is still right on schedule for an October 25th release. And a new behind-the-scenes trailer for the movie gives a bit of an idea of what to expect, as Kanye tells fans that he’s here to "save souls, save you from eternal damnation."
The concert film will center around a performance from Kanye’s gospel ensemble, which he’s taken around the country as part of his Sunday Service concert series. Jesus is King will screen only in IMAX theaters, and will feature a concert filmed at artist James Turrell’s yet-to-be-completed "Roden Crater" installation in Arizona.
"We're here to spread the gospel, I'm not here for your entertainment," says Kanye in the trailer. "I'm an evangelist, so my music, my films, every conversation, every room I go in—we're here to save souls, save you from eternal damnation." It’s not an unsurprising message from the rapper—his wife Kim Kardashian West revealed on The View in September that her husband had become a born-again Christian, and the West later announced at an album listening session that he would no longer make secular music.
Turrell himself also appears in the trailer. The famed artist is a favorite among musicians, and the influence of his light and space installations was most famously visible in Drake’s 2015 "Hotline Bling" music video. This January, long before news of Jesus is King broke, West announced that he would be making a $10 million donation towards the continued construction of Turrell’s "Roden Crater" installation, which when completed will include 21 interconnected celestial observatories.
"Went to visit the James Turrell crater two days ago," he tweeted after visiting the site. "This is life changing. We all will live in Turrell spaces." We may not live in them yet, but West’s Jesus is King offers a glimpse at the highly-anticipated artwork. Check out the clip below.
