The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with an annual visit to the Irish Guards in Hounslow, West London, on Saturday. Although the couple often appear very stoic together, they broke from tradition at the event in a rare display of public affection.

Kate, who is due to give birth to the couple’s third child in April, stunned in a forest green Catherine Walker coat and matching hat. William, who perhaps noticed how stunning his wife looked, lovingly placed his hand on Kate’s back.

It may seem insignificant, but the Duke and Duchess are never touchy-feely at events where they represent the monarchy. The reserved decorum is a huge contrast from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whose PDA has become major fodder for the media.

“It is actually simply is a matter of preference for each couple. Every royal is clearly trusted to make their own judgment calls to what they think is appropriate,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told the Huffington Post back in December.

“One day, {William} will be the King of England, and the Duke of Cambridge is clearly very sensitive to the honour he has been given.”

In December, William and Kate made headlines for showing affection while being awarded the gold Blue Peter badges for their campaign work on mental health issues affecting kids. At one point during the interview, Kate looked over at William and patted his knee. The pat was quick — but it was sweet and affectionate.
